On the Occasion of ‘World Health Day’ a role play was conducted by the Department of Community Medicine at Indira nagar Rural Health Training Centre Ukkali to raise awareness about the symptoms of heat related illness, its treatment and prevention on 25th May 2023. Interns from the centre participated in it. Role play was done by narrating a story in which a farmer working in the field during summer days fall due to heat exhaustion, who was recovered by the surrounding people. Number of beneficiaries of the activity were 54.
This event was organized at Indira nagar Ukkali under the supervision of Dr Rashmi Hullalli RHTC Incharge, Dr Bhoomika PG and Sanjeev Khangoudar MSW.
The event successfully raised awareness among the people of the village in identifying the heat related illness, treating it with the available home remedies and dos and donts of heat related illness.

Climate Change and Child Health Training Initiative First time in Karnataka: Empowering Medical Officers and Front line Workers

Vijayapura, Karnataka – On November 28, 2023, in a groundbreaking initiative, first time in the state of Karnataka a training program addressing the impact of Climate Change and Child Health was successfully organized by Department of Community Medicine at BLDE (DU) Shri B M Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre in Vijayapura, District Health & Family Welfare Department, Vijayapura. UNICEF, Hyderabad Field Office, India, provided crucial support for this pioneering endeavor.
Themed as “Nurturing Tomorrow: Bridging the Gap for a Healthy Environment and Child Health,” the Continuing Medical Education (CME) initiative aimed at equipping medical officers and frontline workers with essential knowledge and strategies.
The inauguration ceremony witnessed the distinguished presence of Dr. Shivanand Mastiholi, District Surgeon, Vijayapura, who served as the Chief Guest. Dr. Sumangala Patil, Vice Principal Pre Para Clinical, assumed the role of President. The event also saw the participation of notable figures such as Dr. Shridhar Ryavanki, Health Specialist from UNICEF, Hyderabad, Dr. Basavaraj Hubbali, District Health Officer (DHO), Dr. M C Yadavannavar, Head of the Department, Dr. Shailaja S. Patil, Professor, and Dr. Jebunnissa Begaum Belagi, District Nodal officer for NPCCHH, Dr. Rekha Udgiri. Professor & Dr. M R Gudadinni, Professor. Training modules for MO and FLW on “Environmnet & Child Health” was released by the dignitaries and was distributed as reading materials to all the participants.
Following the inauguration, a series of insightful lectures were delivered by accomplished speakers. Dr. Chandrika Doddihal, Associate Professor, addressed the crucial connection between a healthy environment and child well-being. Dr. Tanuja Pattankar, Associate Professor, explored the impact of indoor air pollution on child health, while Dr. Shailaja S. Patil discussed the role of the health sector in responding to a changing climate. Dr. Mohamud Sharif, State Nodal Officer NPCCHH, provided insights into programmatic aspects. Dr. Rashmi Hullalli spoke on the effects of heat stress on child health, and Dr. Pooja Todalabagi, Assistant Professor, focused on lead poisoning and its implications for child health. Real-life case scenarios were presented by Pediatricians Dr. MM Patil and Dr. SS Kalyanshetter, offering practical insights to the engaged audience. This collaborative and comprehensive training program marked a significant step toward enhancing the preparedness of healthcare professionals in addressing the complex challenges at the intersection of climate change and child health. Report on Post Graduate Refresher Course
A Post Graduate refresher course was conducted by Department of Community Medicine, SDM College and Medical Sciences, Dharwad in association with Iapsm Karnataka on the 3rd and 4th of Nov 2023. This was a 2-day course which oriented postgraduates towards the important aspects of community medicine emphasizing on the
practical aspects.
65 post graduates from all over Karnataka attended the program. 17 resource persons shared their rich expertise during the academic feast.
HEALTH TALK on ZIKA virus outbreak
Dr. Sunil Kumar D.R., Secretary of IAPSM Karnataka Chapter was invited by TV 9 Kannada, a Karnataka state channel to participate as a public health specialist in a LIVE debate to provide expert insights on the recent outbreak of Zika Virus in Chikkaballapura District, Karnataka on 3rd Nov 2023.
The discussion carried out covered the aspects of awareness of transmission of the disease, symptoms, treatment and control measures. The role of the public and the Department of Health, Govt of Karnataka in containing the spread of the Zika Virus was brought to focus to halt the occurrence of epidemicity in the state.
Report of IAPSM Karnataka chapter and NTEP meeting.
An online meeting between NTEP team and IAPSM, Karnataka branch office bearers and GC members was held on 24th Sept 2023.
The meeting started with opening remarks from ‘Dr. Poonam Naik’ President IAPSM, Karnataka chapter.
‘Dr Saurabh Kumar’, Chairman STF, TB -Karnataka coordinated the meeting.\
‘Dr Ashok Bhardwaj’ Chairman NTEP addressed the forum and provided key inputs and suggestions on public health aspects and opportunities for Dept of Community Medicine in strengthening NTEP.
Later ‘Dr. Suryavanshi’, WHO National Consultant ,Central TB Division presented a session on “SOP & Tole of medical colleges ” in NTEP.
‘Dr.Saurabh’ later shared the important activities of Karnataka STF and the way forward for future activities .
During Open discussion between NTEP and IAPSM officials, the strategies and activities for strengthening TV program in the state with more involvement of medical colleges in Karnataka were discussed.
Few key areas on training, implementation and operations research in NTEP by IAPSM , Karnataka was discussed in the forum.
National Cancer Prevention Day
National Cancer Prevention Day was observed on 4.2.2023 by the Department of Community Medicine, SS Institute of Medical Sciences, Davangere in association with the IAPSM – Karnataka branch. A roadshow was organized by 1st-year Medical Students on 4.2.2023 to provide awareness about cancer prevention to the general population of Arasapura village, Davangere.
Health camp
“Sparsha Trust”, Masonic Rural Clinic,” Akash Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre” in association with “Indian Association of Adolescent Health,-Karnataka Chapter” and “Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine, Karnataka” organised a Health Camp and Counselling session for Destitute Children in ‘Makkala Dhama’, Bangalore Rural Dist.
143 Girls were screened by a team from General Medicine, OBG, Paediatrics, Dermatology, Community Medicine specialities and counselling support by Psychiatry Dept. Needy children and adolescents were referred to Akash Hospital for further management.
World No Tobacco Day
On the eve of ‘World No Tobacco Day’, health education about the theme- We need food, no tobacco was conducted on 31st May 2023 for the general public in Primary Health Centre, Arasapura, Davangere by SS institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Davangere in association with IAPSM- Karnataka state chapter.
Painting Competition on World AIDS Day

On the eve of World AIDS Day, a painting competition was organized by the Department of Community Medicine, SS Institute of Medical Sciences, Davangere in association with IAPSM – Karnataka branch for the nursing students of SS Institute of Nursing Sciences, Davangere on 15th Dec 2022.
The event was conducted by Dr. Sheela P Haveri, Professor, and Asha B, Associate Professor. The theme of the painting event was “Equalize: Putting Ourselves to the Test – Achieving Equity to End HIV.” 1st and 2nd prizes were won by Vinayak and Ananya, Parvathi respectively.
